Fall 2020 Student and Mentor Opportunities in VR, Health Tech, Innovation, and Emerging Technologies

Hyper Innovation, a Madison-based innovation agency, and HyperX Madison, a registered student org at UW-Madison, are excited to partner around corporate/startup driven industry problems to solve while fostering multidisciplinary student innovation for shared learning, hands-on experience, and talent development in a ‘Tech Exploration Lab’ this fall.

Undergraduates and graduate students from all majors are invited to take part to learn more about the promise of applications for new technologies. Students don’t need special skills and are invited to learn and explore the promise of new technologies in real-world applications. Industry organizations and professionals are also invited to participate as mentors or propose challenges or projects.

Fall 2020 Student Opportunities Include (all virtual):

New Health Tech Solutions and Healthcare Innovation Mini-Challenge
Sponsored by Hyper Innovation, the Hyper Innovation Digital Health Test Bed will be made available to students for exploring new use cases in healthcare innovation. The Test Bed is essentially a simulated clinic with expert clinical and technical mentors, de-identified healthcare data, and a test EMR environment for testing new technologies.

Participating students will gain hands-on experience and learn about healthcare data with a demo AI test case and can generate their own ideas for developing in the test bed. Students will have the opportunity to present their learnings and potential ideas at the end of the semester to an industry audience.

Student Innovation Challenge
Sponsored by CALS at UW-Madison and the Dairy Innovation Hub, students from all majors are encouraged to compete for over $10,000 in cash prizes to generate out-of-the-box ideas and tech solutions for a multi-billion dollar industry in the state of Wisconsin. No agricultural experience is required, only innovative thinking. Learn more and apply.

Virtual Reality UI Exploration
Explore novel user interfaces in virtual reality that are centered around the hands with spatial computing startup, Holos. Students will have the opportunity to present their learnings and potential ideas for implementation of new VR/AR user interface elements at the end of the semester to an industry audience.

Tech Investigators Web Series
Join UW-Madison faculty Kevin Ponto from the UW-Madison Virtual Environments Group at the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery to explore the question of whether sci-fi technology of the past holds up to the tech capabilities of today. Besides researching sci-fi content and current tech applications, students will have the opportunity to produce a short video and present to an industry audience at the end of the semester.

Bring Your Own Idea
Students interested in pursuing their own interests, building a team around an existing idea, or learning more about the applications of an existing technology can bring passions and interests to take part in learning, exploration, and frameworks for advancing your idea at your own pace.

Bryce Sprecher, staff in the Virtual Environments Lab, and corporate business leaders and startup co-founders from targeted industries will be available and potentially matched to specific student interests to bring industry and subject-matter expertise to advance ideas.
